United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres arrived in Damascus on Saturday for a landmark visit to Syria, reaffirming the UN's commitment to supporting the Syrian people and government during a pivotal moment in the country's history.

Guterres was received at Damascus International Airport by Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Assad Hassan al-Shaibani before holding talks with Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa at the People's Palace in the capital.

The visit marks the first trip by a UN Secretary-General to Syria since 2009 and comes as the country seeks to advance reconstruction and recovery efforts after years of conflict.

Upon arriving in Damascus, Guterres underscored the United Nations' solidarity with Syria in a message posted on the social media platform X.

"I have just arrived in Damascus for a visit of solidarity," Guterres wrote.

"My message is clear: The United Nations stands with Syria at this pivotal moment, and I appeal to the international community to spare no effort to support the people of Syria as well."

The UN chief called on the international community to intensify its support for the Syrian people, emphasizing the need for sustained international engagement as the country confronts humanitarian, economic, and reconstruction challenges.

Ahead of the visit, the United Nations said Guterres would reaffirm the organization's commitment to supporting both the Syrian government and its people during this critical phase, while stressing the importance of respecting Syria's sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.

According to the UN, the visit will also allow the Secretary-General to gain firsthand insight into the aspirations and challenges facing Syrians, as well as the lasting impact of more than a decade of conflict on communities across the country.

Guterres is expected to meet with senior Syrian officials and discuss humanitarian assistance, recovery efforts, and avenues for enhanced cooperation between Syria and the United Nations, as Damascus continues efforts to rebuild and restore stability. (ILKHA)
