Heavy rains in Haiti cause devastating floods, leaving dozens dead and displaced
The country faces a grim situation as floods and landslides wreak havoc after intense rainfall.
Haiti has been hit hard by torrential rains over the weekend, resulting in widespread flooding that has left at least 51 people dead, 18 missing and 140 others injured, according to an official statement from the country's Civil Protection Agency on Monday.
The relentless downpour caused numerous rivers across Haiti to overflow, triggering flash floods, extensive flooding, rockslides, and landslides, as outlined in a report by the United Nations. The calamitous effects have been felt in multiple regions, including the West, Nippes, South-East, North-West, and the Center departments.
Tragically, the impact of the flooding has led to the displacement of over 13,300 individuals, with an additional 11 people reported missing. The dire situation continues to unfold, as persistent heavy rains persistently pound the country.
Prime Minister Ariel Henry took to Twitter, expressing the urgent need for action in collaboration with national and international institutions to address the current crisis.
“My government, in concert with national and international institutions, is taking urgent measures in order to meet the demands of the hour,” he stated.
As the rainfall persists, the death toll continues to rise steadily, further exacerbating the gravity of the situation faced by Haiti and its affected communities. (ILKHA)
