IMF reaches $8.2 billion agreement with Ukraine amid ongoing war pressures
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has reached a staff-level agreement with Ukraine for a new 48-month $8.2 billion program under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF), supporting macroeconomic stability, governance reforms, and debt sustainability, the fund announced.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) confirmed on Wednesday that it has reached a staff-level agreement with Ukrainian authorities on a new 48-month program worth $8.2 billion. The agreement comes as Ukraine continues to face the devastating economic and social consequences of Russia’s ongoing war.
According to the IMF, discussions between its delegation and Ukrainian officials were held from November 17–21. The new program under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) sets out a framework of macroeconomic and structural reforms designed to maintain stability, restore debt sustainability, and improve external balances.
The fund emphasized that Ukrainian authorities are committed to addressing informality, fighting corruption, and strengthening governance, including in state-owned enterprises. Despite the challenges posed by the conflict, Ukrainian officials remain determined to protect macroeconomic stability and ensure long-term fiscal resilience.
The IMF stated that the program could be presented to its Executive Board for approval once prior actions are completed and donor financing is secured. The fund further highlighted that the program will be reviewed and recalibrated as necessary to reflect progress toward achieving a durable peace.
“This agreement underscores the international community’s continued support for Ukraine’s economy, even amid ongoing hostilities,” the IMF noted.
The new EFF program is expected to provide critical financial resources, helping Ukraine navigate war-induced economic pressures, implement structural reforms, and safeguard the welfare of its citizens during an exceptionally challenging period. (ILKHA)
