Three children killed in unexploded ordnance blast in northern Afghanistan
Three children were killed and two others injured after an unexploded ordnance detonated in northern Afghanistan’s Balkh province, the provincial police office announced Wednesday night.
According to the statement, the incident occurred in the Nahri Shahi district when the children discovered the device and began playing with it. The ordnance exploded, killing three children instantly and wounding two others.
The tragedy follows a similar incident on Sunday in southern Kandahar province, where two people were killed and seven others injured after an unexploded device detonated.
Afghanistan remains one of the most heavily mine-contaminated countries in the world, with unexploded ordnance and landmines left behind from more than four decades of conflict and civil war continuing to pose a deadly risk to civilians, particularly children. (ILKHA)
