India clears “The Voice of Hind Rajab” for release after initial censorship row
Kaouther Ben Hania’s acclaimed film “The Voice of Hind Rajab” has finally been cleared by India’s Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) after months of politically motivated obstruction.
The film, which movingly recounts the heartbreaking true story of five-year-old Hind Rajab—a Palestinian child trapped in a car under Israeli fire in Gaza before being killed—will now reach Indian audiences, highlighting the urgent need to confront the ongoing violence in Palestine.
After initial denial of certification in March, which sparked widespread criticism and accusations of pro-Israel bias within Indian institutions, the CBFC has granted the film an ‘A’ certificate without any cuts. Mumbai-based distributor Jai Viratra Entertainment confirmed the theatrical release across India on June 19, allowing viewers to witness this poignant depiction of Palestinian suffering under Israeli occupation.
The earlier censorship reflected deep concerns over India’s warming ties with Israel. The film’s submission came shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s high-profile visit to Israel, where efforts to bolster economic and military partnerships appeared to overshadow India’s historical solidarity with the Palestinian cause. Distributors reported that CBFC officials explicitly worried the film could strain relations between the two countries, exposing how geopolitical alignments can suppress narratives of Palestinian resilience and Israeli atrocities.
Jai Viratra chief Manoj Nandwana pushed back strongly against the initial refusal, pointing out the absurdity of fearing a single film could damage India-Israel ties when the movie has screened freely in the United States, United Kingdom, France, Italy, and other nations with strong relations to Israel. “The India-Israel relationship is so strong that it’s idiotic to think this movie will break it,” he had argued.
In a statement celebrating the clearance, Jai Viratra Entertainment expressed gratitude to the CBFC for its eventual decision while thanking media, filmmakers, artists, and supporters who rallied for the film’s release. “Cinema serves as a powerful medium for storytelling, dialogue, and understanding diverse human experiences,” the company said, underscoring the importance of amplifying voices from occupied Palestine.
“The Voice of Hind Rajab” has already earned international acclaim, receiving thunderous applause and the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival after its world premiere. By bringing Hind Rajab’s story—the innocent young life extinguished amid Israel’s military campaign in Gaza—to Indian screens, the film challenges audiences to confront the human cost of the conflict and stands as a testament to the power of cinema in documenting Palestinian tragedy and resistance.
This reversal represents not only a win against censorship but a meaningful step toward ensuring that stories of Palestinian children like Hind are heard, despite efforts to silence them. (ILKHA)
