Iran criticizes UNHRC's adoption of resolution on human rights

Iran's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Ali Bahreini, has strongly criticized the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for adopting draft resolution L.20 concerning the human rights situation in the Islamic Republic of Iran.
During the 58th session of the Human Rights Council on Friday, Bahreini condemned the resolution's monitoring mechanisms targeting Iran, describing them as discriminatory and unjustified. He argued that such measures waste resources and undermine trust in the Council's work.
Bahreini highlighted severe human rights violations in the occupied Palestinian territories and the lack of accountability for perpetrators. He asserted that while Palestine faces ongoing abuses with impunity, the sponsors of resolution L.20 have fabricated a misleading portrayal of Iran's human rights situation to divert the Council's attention.
This development follows Iran's previous rejection of UN human rights mechanisms and its vow of non-cooperation with fact-finding missions. Bahreini has previously criticized initiatives led by Western countries, accusing them of hypocrisy given their own human rights records and their support for Israel amid the ongoing Palestinian crisis.
The adoption of resolution L.20 has further strained relations between Iran and the UNHRC, with Iran asserting that such resolutions are politically motivated and fail to acknowledge the country's human rights achievements.
As tensions escalate, the international community remains divided on the approach to addressing human rights concerns in Iran, balancing the need for accountability with respect for national sovereignty and the complexities of geopolitical dynamics. (ILKHA)
