Iran nears deal for Chinese CM-302 anti-ship missiles as U.S. carriers rally in region
Iran is close to finalizing a deal with China to purchase CM-302 supersonic anti-ship cruise missiles, according to sources familiar with the negotiations.
The CM‑302 missile is designed to travel at supersonic speeds, evade radar and naval defenses, and strike targets at ranges of up to 290 kilometers. It can be launched from ships, aircraft, or land platforms, and is capable of hitting both maritime and terrestrial targets.
Experts warn that if Iran successfully acquires the CM‑302, it would gain a “game-changing” capability in the region, particularly amid the ongoing tensions in the Persian Gulf and the eastern Mediterranean.
The deal comes after a period of heightened conflict in the region, including the 12-day escalation between Iran and the Israeli regime in June 2025, which accelerated talks between Tehran and Beijing.
Iranian officials emphasized the strategic importance of the acquisition, while China’s Foreign Ministry stated that it had not been officially informed about the ongoing negotiations.
In response to Iran’s growing missile capabilities, the United States has increased its military presence in the region, deploying additional naval and air assets to monitor and deter potential threats.
Iranian sources further indicated that discussions with China are not limited to the CM‑302, with possible acquisitions of additional air defense and anti-ballistic missile systems also under consideration.
The potential transfer of CM‑302 missiles underscores Tehran’s determination to enhance its defense and deterrence capabilities, while simultaneously heightening concerns among regional and Western powers over the shifting military balance. (ILKHA)
