Iran reaffirms NPT commitment conditional on full treaty rights

Iran will remain a member of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) only if it continues to enjoy the treaty’s guaranteed rights, including the right to enrich uranium, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said on Monday during his weekly press briefing.
Baghaei’s comments followed talks held Friday in Istanbul between Iran and the three European signatories of the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). He confirmed that the discussions—centered on sanctions relief and nuclear issues—will continue.
Baghaei stressed that Iran’s dialogue with the European parties addresses clear objectives: lifting sanctions and resolving nuclear program matters.
“Every negotiation naturally has two sides. Introducing unrelated topics by some Western countries only creates confusion and undermines coherence in their positions,” he said.
Responding to reports about a possible extension of UN Security Council Resolution 2231, Baghaei reiterated that European states lack the legal basis to trigger the snapback mechanism, which could restore UN sanctions.
“We have informed these countries of our position. If this mechanism is used, Iran will respond, and we hope the opposite parties realize the risks and avoid complicating the situation,” he warned.
Baghaei stated there are no plans for negotiations with the United States, reaffirming Tehran’s stance that direct dialogue remains off the table.
Addressing developments in the South Caucasus, the spokesman reaffirmed Iran’s longstanding policy of rejecting any changes to geographical borders.
He underscored the importance of peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan, urging the two nations to accelerate the peace process and warning that delays could fuel tensions.
Baghaei concluded by emphasizing Iran’s readiness to support initiatives that contribute to regional stability and constructive diplomatic solutions. (ILKHA)
