Iraq’s new Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi officially takes office
Iraq’s new Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi officially assumed office in Baghdad on Saturday, taking over the premiership from Mohammed Shia al-Sudani following the completion of the government formation process.
Al-Zaidi formally received the post during an official handover ceremony held in the Iraqi capital, assuming duties both as prime minister and commander-in-chief of the armed forces.
The political transition came after Iraqi President Nizar Amidi assigned al-Zaidi to form a new government amid lengthy negotiations between political blocs. The process was finalized after parliament granted confidence to the cabinet on May 14.
Al-Zaidi’s government received parliamentary approval after months of political deadlock and negotiations among major Iraqi factions. Parliament approved 14 ministers in the new cabinet, while voting on several other ministries was postponed.
Speaking after taking office, al-Zaidi pledged to respect constitutional timelines and work in coordination with all political actors in the country.
President Amidi meanwhile called on political groups and state institutions to support the new government during the coming period.
Al-Zaidi’s appointment followed months of compromise efforts among Iraq’s major political factions, as the country continues to face economic, political and security challenges.
The new Iraqi administration is expected to focus on economic reforms, public services, anti-corruption efforts and maintaining security stability across the country.(ILKHA)
