Israeli forces shelled several areas in Syria’s southern Daraa countryside early Monday, striking the Abidin and al-Raqad valleys and opening machine-gun fire toward nearby areas, according to Syria’s official SANA news agency. No casualties were reported.

Local sources reported that several artillery shells hit the two valleys in western Daraa, while Israeli forces also targeted the outskirts of Jamlah village in the Yarmouk Basin.

Israeli forces opened machine-gun fire from a position along the 1974 disengagement line toward the outskirts of Abidin town, according to the report.

The incident came a day after Israeli forces shelled a forest near Bir Ajam village and areas around al-Rafid town in neighboring Quneitra province, according to SANA.

The latest attacks add to growing tensions in southern Syria, where Damascus has repeatedly accused Israel of violating the 1974 Disengagement Agreement through military incursions, arrests, demolitions, land clearing and artillery fire.

Syrian authorities have condemned the Israeli military presence and repeated operations in the south, saying they constitute violations of Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Damascus has repeatedly called for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Syrian territory and urged the international community to take action to ensure compliance with international law and the 1974 agreement.

Syria maintains that measures imposed or carried out by Israel in areas under its control are legally invalid and cannot alter the country’s sovereignty over its territory.

The 1974 agreement established a buffer zone and separated Syrian and Israeli forces following the 1973 Arab-Israeli war. United Nations observers have since monitored the area under the UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF). (ILKHA)
