LNG tanker issues distress call after attack in Gulf of Oman
A liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker issued repeated distress calls after coming under attack while sailing in the Gulf of Oman near the Strait of Hormuz.
According to maritime radio communications, the AL REKAYYAT LNG tanker reported that its port side had been struck, prompting an emergency response.
The crew initially described the incident as a drone attack, while maritime authorities said the vessel had been hit by an unidentified projectile.
Following the impact, a fire broke out in the engine room, producing heavy smoke. The crew said they were unable to determine the full extent of the damage and requested immediate assistance from nearby coast radio stations and naval forces.
Radio communications also indicated that all crew members were safe and had gathered on the starboard side of the vessel.
The incident took place near the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route for global oil and liquefied natural gas exports, amid heightened tensions in the region.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the nature of the projectile or identified those responsible for the attack. (ILKHA)
