Madagascar's confirmed mpox cases surpass 2,000
The number of confirmed mpox cases in Madagascar has exceeded 2,000, according to the latest data released by the country's Ministry of Public Health, as authorities continue efforts to contain the outbreak first detected in December 2025.
The ministry said 3,387 suspected cases have been recorded nationwide since the outbreak began, with laboratory testing confirming 2,060 infections.
Seven deaths linked to the disease have been reported so far, health officials said.
In its latest update, the ministry recorded 21 new confirmed cases and 40 additional suspected infections over the past 24 hours, indicating continued transmission in several parts of the country.
Authorities urged residents experiencing symptoms consistent with mpox to seek medical attention promptly and follow public health guidance aimed at limiting the spread of the virus.
Mpox is a viral disease that can spread through close physical contact with infected individuals, contaminated materials or infected animals. Symptoms typically include fever, skin lesions and swollen lymph nodes.
The outbreak in Madagascar comes as several countries continue to strengthen surveillance and response measures to prevent the spread of mpox and contain new clusters of infection.(ILKHA)
