Major rescue operation underway after landslide hits Chongqing in southwest China
A landslide struck a section of road in Pengshui Miao and Tujia Autonomous County in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality early Friday, trapping an unknown number of people and damaging nearby buildings, local sources reported.
Emergency response teams were immediately dispatched to the scene as rescue operations continued throughout the day.
According to local media outlets, nine people who had been trapped by the landslide were successfully rescued and transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. Authorities have not yet disclosed the condition of the injured or the total number of people who may still be trapped.
As a precaution, residents living near the affected area have been safely evacuated to prevent further casualties.
China's Ministry of Emergency Management has mobilized 100 emergency response personnel to assist with the rescue effort. In addition, 206 firefighters have been deployed to search for survivors, clear debris, and secure the affected area.
To support emergency operations and provide assistance to displaced residents, authorities have allocated 8,000 relief items, including tents, folding beds, blankets, and emergency kits.
Rescue teams continue to work at the site as officials assess the extent of the damage and search for anyone who may remain trapped beneath the debris.
Authorities have not yet announced the cause of the landslide, and investigations are ongoing. (ILKHA)
