NATO to deploy Italian SAMP-T missile defense system in central Türkiye
NATO will deploy an Italian-operated SAMP-T missile defense system to central Türkiye as part of efforts to strengthen the alliance's air defense posture and enhance the security of Turkish airspace, the Turkish Ministry of National Defense announced on Tuesday.
In a statement, the ministry said the deployment is being carried out under NATO's standing defense plans and reflects the alliance's ongoing commitment to collective security and regional stability.
According to the statement, the advanced air defense system will be stationed at the 3rd Main Jet Base Command in the central province of Konya, a strategic military hub that plays a key role in Türkiye's air operations and NATO activities.
The SAMP-T (Surface-to-Air Missile Platform/Terrain) is a highly mobile air and missile defense system jointly developed by France and Italy. Designed to counter a wide range of aerial threats, the system is capable of intercepting aircraft, cruise missiles, drones and certain types of ballistic missiles, providing a significant boost to air defense capabilities.
Defense officials noted that the deployment forms part of NATO's broader efforts to reinforce the alliance's southeastern flank amid evolving regional security challenges. The system's advanced radar and missile technology will contribute to strengthening the integrated NATO air and missile defense network.
The latest deployment follows additional NATO measures aimed at enhancing Türkiye's defensive capabilities. The alliance has already reinforced its military presence in the country by deploying an extra Patriot missile battery to Incirlik Air Base in the southern province of Adana.
Türkiye, which possesses NATO's second-largest military, remains a critical member of the alliance due to its strategic location at the crossroads of Europe, the Middle East and the Black Sea region. NATO officials have repeatedly emphasized the importance of maintaining robust air and missile defense capabilities across the alliance's southern and eastern regions.
The deployment of the Italian SAMP-T system is expected to further strengthen Türkiye's air defense architecture while improving NATO's ability to respond to potential threats in the region. (ILKHA)
