Nechirvan Barzani expresses concern after deadly flash floods hit Chamchamal
Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani has expressed deep concern following deadly flash floods that struck the Chamchamal district in Iraq’s Sulaimani province, leaving two people dead and several others injured, according to an official statement issued on Tuesday.
In the statement, President Barzani extended his condolences to the families of the victims and offered his sympathy to residents affected by the disaster. He wished a speedy recovery to those injured and affirmed the Kurdistan Region’s full support for the people of Chamchamal during the difficult period.
Earlier, Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani also conveyed condolences to the families of the victims and ordered immediate assistance and emergency support to affected communities.
Local health officials confirmed that the fatalities occurred in the Shorsh sub-district of Chamchamal. Sharif Rahim, Deputy Director General of Health in Chamchamal, said that a man born in 1953 died after a wall collapsed on him amid heavy rainfall, while a woman born in 2003 lost her life due to flooding.
Authorities said rescue and emergency teams remain on the ground assessing damage to homes and infrastructure, while response and relief operations continue. Residents in flood-affected areas have been urged to follow safety instructions as the region braces for the possibility of further heavy rainfall. (ILKHA)
