A drone strike carried out by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group on the Saudi Hospital in El Fasher, North Darfur, has left more than 70 people dead, including women and children, according to Darfur Governor Arcua Minnawi.
The attack, which occurred on Saturday, reportedly destroyed the hospital’s emergency department, killing all patients inside, Minnawi stated on social media. The governor also shared images depicting extensive damage to the hospital.
El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state, is a critical hub for humanitarian aid operations in the region. The city has been a hotspot of violence since May 10, despite repeated international calls to avoid escalation.
The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF, which erupted in April 2023, has caused a massive humanitarian disaster. Over 20,000 people have been killed and 14 million displaced, according to the United Nations and local authorities.
A study conducted by U.S.-based universities estimates the death toll to be significantly higher, nearing 130,000.
The fighting, now affecting 13 of Sudan’s 18 states, has led to severe food shortages, pushing millions toward famine. Aid organizations have repeatedly warned of an escalating humanitarian catastrophe.
As of now, the RSF has not commented on the reported drone strike. The international community continues to urge all parties to prioritize the safety of civilians and allow unrestricted humanitarian access to affected regions. (ILKHA)
