Palestinian prisoner Abdullah al-Barghouthi injured after assault in Israeli prison
Palestinian prisoner Abdullah al-Barghouthi, a senior commander of Hamas’s al-Qassam Brigades, was injured on Wednesday following what Palestinian prisoner advocacy groups described as an assault by an Israeli jailer inside Gilboa Prison.
According to the Asra Media Office, the incident occurred as al-Barghouthi was being escorted to a family visit inside the facility. The group said an Israeli guard deliberately slammed al-Barghouthi’s head against a steel door, causing injuries to his left eye and leaving him bleeding.
Asra Media further reported that al-Barghouthi is suffering from severe weight loss and deteriorating health due to what it described as prolonged starvation and systematic medical neglect inside the prison. The organization warned that the continued treatment of al-Barghouthi poses a “direct and serious threat” to his life.
The group said the latest incident reflects a broader pattern of abuse, repression, and violations against Palestinian detainees held in Israeli prisons, accusing prison authorities of escalating mistreatment amid what it described as ongoing international silence.
Rights groups have repeatedly raised concerns over conditions in Israeli detention facilities, citing reports of physical abuse, denial of adequate medical care, and harsh confinement measures. Palestinian organizations say such practices have intensified in recent months, particularly against high-profile detainees.
Israeli prison authorities did not immediately comment on the allegations. (ILKHA)
