Pro-Palestine activists raise flag on Tower Bridge, demand freedom for Gaza doctor
Pro-Palestine activists staged high-profile demonstrations in central London on Monday, raising the Palestinian flag on the iconic Tower Bridge and calling for the immediate release of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the director of Gaza's Kamal Adwan Hospital, who has remained in Israeli detention since 2024.
During the protest, demonstrators unfurled a large Palestinian flag alongside a banner reading, "Free Dr. Hussam Now," drawing attention to the continued detention of the prominent Palestinian physician, whose imprisonment has become a symbol for campaigners advocating for the protection of Gaza's medical personnel.
The peaceful demonstration prompted London police to temporarily close Tower Bridge to traffic in both directions as activists displayed banners and flags from the landmark crossing.
In a separate action later the same day, pro-Palestine campaigners gathered at London Waterloo Station, where they displayed the Palestinian flag and another banner demanding Dr. Abu Safiya's release from the station's second floor.
Protesters chanted slogans expressing solidarity with the Palestinian people and condemning Israel's continued detention of the Gaza hospital director, urging the international community to increase pressure for his immediate release.
The demonstrations come amid growing international concern over the detention of Palestinian healthcare workers during Israel's military operations in Gaza. Human rights advocates have repeatedly called for the protection of medical personnel, emphasizing that healthcare workers must not be targeted or arbitrarily detained while carrying out humanitarian duties.
On June 16, Israel's Supreme Court rejected a petition seeking Dr. Abu Safiya's release, allowing his detention to continue despite mounting appeals from rights organizations and medical associations.
The protests in London reflect expanding international solidarity campaigns demanding freedom for Palestinian medical workers and accountability for actions affecting Gaza's healthcare system, which has been severely strained by months of conflict. Activists vowed to continue demonstrations until Dr. Abu Safiya is released and greater protections are afforded to Palestinian civilians and healthcare professionals. (ILKHA)
