Russia strikes energy infrastructure in Kyiv and port facilities near Odesa
Russia has struck energy infrastructure in and around Kyiv, facilities in the Dnipropetrovsk region and port infrastructure near Odesa, the Russian Defence Ministry said on Friday, as Moscow intensified attacks on Ukrainian military-related and strategic infrastructure.
In a statement posted on Telegram, the ministry said Russian forces had targeted military facilities, including energy installations that it claimed supported Ukraine’s military-industrial sector. It also reported strikes on port facilities in the Odesa region and cargo vessels allegedly being used for military purposes.
The ministry did not provide detailed information about the extent of the damage or identify the vessels involved. Its claims could not be independently verified.
Separate reports on Friday also indicated thatussian strikes had caused fires in Kyiv and Kharkiv and hit an industrial facility near Kremenchuk, according to local officials cited in media reports. These incidents came amid continued Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.
The latest reported strikes come as Ukraine faces mounting pressure on its energy infrastructure ahead of the winter season. Russian attacks on power plants and other critical facilities have repeatedly disrupted electricity supplies, raising concerns over heating and essential services as temperatures fall.
The Odesa region is also strategically important because its Black Sea ports serve as major routes for Ukraine's maritime trade and agricultural exports. Damage to port infrastructure or commercial vessels could further disrupt shipping operations and increase security risks for maritime traffic.
Moscow has repeatedly described its attacks on Ukrainian energy, transport and port facilities as operations against infrastructure supporting Ukraine's armed forces. However, claims about specific military targets and the results of individual strikes have not always been independently confirmed.
Ukraine has also continued to launch attacks against Russian military and energy-related targets as the conflict, which began with Moscow's full-scale invasion in February 2022, shows no sign of an immediate resolution. (ILKHA)
