Russian missile strikes kill one, injure 10 in Kyiv
Russian ballistic missile strikes on Kyiv overnight killed one person and injured 10, damaging medical facilities, university buildings, homes and a major bridge, Ukrainian officials said on Tuesday.
The injured included a paramedic, a medical technician and a 20-year-old university student, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said. Nine injured medical personnel were hospitalized.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said the strikes damaged a university campus, residential buildings and Kyoto Park in the Ukrainian capital.
The first explosions were reported at around 9:45 p.m. local time on Monday, after Ukraine's Air Force warned of incoming missiles. Buildings were damaged in several districts, including a three-story commercial property that was partially destroyed, the State Emergency Service said.
Two medical facilities in the Dniprovskyi district were damaged, with blast waves shattering windows in an intensive care unit and at another site. A school, university buildings and dormitories were also hit, officials said.
A second wave of missile strikes hit the city overnight. The Kyiv Independent reported at least seven explosions within three minutes at around 3:30 a.m. local time, followed by another blast about 15 minutes later.
The second wave damaged an administrative building in the Podilskyi district and non-residential buildings at two other locations, Klitschko said.
The strikes also damaged the Southern Bridge, a major crossing over the Dnipro River connecting eastern and western Kyiv. Train services across the bridge were temporarily suspended, while emergency crews repaired damage at several metro stations elsewhere in the city, the mayor said.
Russia has repeatedly attacked Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities with missiles and drones, while Ukraine has reported shortages of air defence capabilities. Key bridges in the capital have also come under attack several times this month, raising concerns about disruptions to transport and logistics. (ILKHA)
