Sanders takes historic stand to stop U.S. arms sales fueling Israel’s Gaza genocide

U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders announced on Tuesday a bold move to block offensive arms sales to Israel, citing the escalating civilian death toll and man-made famine in the Gaza Strip.
The votes, set for Wednesday, target a $675.7 million arms package and the transfer of tens of thousands of fully automatic assault rifles, which have fueled Israel’s relentless assault on the Palestinian people.
Sanders condemned the U.S. government’s unwavering support for Israel’s far-right, extremist government under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, declaring: “U.S. taxpayers have poured tens of billions into enabling Israel’s atrocities—enough is enough.”
He highlighted the catastrophic toll of Israel’s aggression since October 2023, which has claimed over 60,000 Palestinian lives, predominantly women and children, and deliberately starved Gaza’s population by blocking humanitarian aid, creating a man-made famine. “Congress must use its leverage to stop these horrors and hold Israel accountable,” Sanders urged.
Israel’s genocidal campaign in Gaza, launched on October 7, 2023, has reduced the enclave to ruins, displacing millions and killing thousands in a merciless bombardment. Defying global calls for a ceasefire, Israel’s actions have drawn international outrage and legal scrutiny. In November 2024, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, charging them with war crimes and crimes against humanity for their roles in Gaza’s devastation. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is also hearing a genocide case against Israel, underscoring the urgent need for accountability.
Sanders’ resolutions mark a pivotal moment, challenging the U.S. to end its role as an enabler of Israel’s war crimes. While previous attempts to curb arms sales have been stifled, the staggering loss of Palestinian lives, widespread famine, and global condemnation may finally push Congress to act.
As the Senate prepares for a heated debate, Sanders’ stand offers hope to Palestinians enduring unimaginable suffering and signals a growing movement to prioritize justice over blind allegiance to Israel. (ILKHA)
