Slovenia lifts restrictions on weapons sales to Israel, reversing previous government's policy
Slovenia's new government has withdrawn a series of measures imposed by the previous administration against the Israeli regime, marking a significant shift in the country's Middle East policy.
The decision was taken by the conservative government of Prime Minister Janez Janša, which assumed office on April 4.
Under the new policy, Slovenia will resume arms exports and transit operations involving the Israeli regime and will also restart purchases of military equipment from the Israeli regime, reversing restrictions introduced by the previous government.
The government further removed the persona non grata designations previously imposed on occupation Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich.
Janša also announced plans to revoke Slovenia's recognition of the State of Palestine, reversing a decision approved by the previous administration.
The recognition was granted under the government of former Prime Minister Robert Golob, whose administration had adopted a more critical stance toward the Israeli regime amid developments in Gaza.
Last July, Slovenia became the first country to prohibit arms trade with the Israeli regime, including exports, imports and transit activities involving military equipment.
The latest decision represents a major policy reversal and reflects the new government's different approach to the Israeli-Palestinian issue.
Janša's Slovenian Democratic Party secured enough parliamentary support to form a coalition government following the March 22 parliamentary elections.
The move is expected to attract international attention as European countries continue to differ in their approaches toward the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.(ILKHA)
