Storm Claudia causes widespread flooding and fatalities across UK and Portugal
Storm Claudia has caused severe flooding and multiple deaths across the United Kingdom and Portugal, prompting major emergency responses and warnings.
In Wales, the town of Monmouth declared a major incident on Saturday after the River Monnow burst its banks. Emergency services rescued residents from flooded homes, with some evacuated to a nearby library. Hundreds of homes lost power, and train services were heavily disrupted. Authorities issued four severe flood warnings and multiple flood alerts. Rainfall in some areas reached 81.8 mm in 24 hours, while wind gusts of up to 68 mph were reported. A cold snap with temperatures dropping to around –7°C is expected in the coming days.
In England, about 20 properties were flooded, and several events were canceled due to fallen trees. Flood warnings and alerts remain in effect across vulnerable areas. Authorities continue to clear debris and advise residents to avoid flooded zones.
In Portugal, three people have died as a result of the storm. An 85-year-old British woman was killed at a campsite in Albufeira after strong winds caused severe damage. At least 28 people were injured, with two hospitalized with serious injuries. An elderly couple in their 80s were found dead in Fernão Ferro, near Lisbon, after being unable to escape rising floodwaters. The Portuguese weather service has issued amber alerts for several districts.
Authorities in both countries continue rescue and recovery efforts. The British Red Cross and local agencies have provided emergency shelters, financial assistance, and support for affected residents. Officials are warning the public to remain cautious as rivers remain swollen and roads unsafe. (ILKHA)
