Sudanese army repels RSF assault on Babanusa, consolidates gains in Kordofan
Sudanese military forces announced they successfully thwarted an attack by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Babanusa, asserting control over key areas in West and South Kordofan amid ongoing clashes.
The Sudanese Armed Forces reported that the RSF’s attempt to seize Babanusa in West Kordofan was decisively repelled. According to a statement from the army spokesperson, the insurgent forces targeted the city daily using artillery and unmanned aerial vehicles, contradicting claims of unilateral ceasefires and humanitarian pauses issued by RSF leaders.
The army emphasized its adherence to international humanitarian law, underlining its commitment to civilian protection and ensuring the delivery of essential aid. Military sources noted that Sudanese units and supporting forces have advanced in the western Abbasiyya Taqali region, securing strategic positions in El-Damera, Tebesa, El-Mureyb, and Gurdud—areas previously under the control of the Popular Movement since 2011. RSF elements reportedly withdrew to Taasi following the army’s maneuvers.
Operations are ongoing to break RSF encirclements around Babanusa, Kaduqli, and Dilling, with clashes intensifying in the region. The persistent fighting across the three Kordofan states has displaced tens of thousands of residents in recent weeks.
The Sudanese military’s announcement highlights continued progress on multiple fronts while reaffirming its position as the primary force defending state authority and citizen security amid escalating paramilitary aggression.Sudan’s conflict with the RSF, a semi-military paramilitary group, reflects a deepening internal struggle for control of strategic regions, raising concerns over civilian safety and regional stability.
