Switzerland says US-Iran implementation talks planned for Friday
Switzerland announced that talks on the implementation of the recently signed US-Iran peace agreement are scheduled to take place on June 19 at the Buergenstock resort, although Iranian officials have suggested the meeting could be postponed.
In a statement, the Swiss government said representatives of the United States and Iran are currently expected to hold their first round of implementation talks on Friday at the mountain resort in central Switzerland.
The statement added that mediator countries, including Pakistan and Qatar, as well as other participating states, are expected to attend the meeting.
The planned talks come after Washington and Tehran announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the conflict in the Middle East and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian reportedly signed the memorandum electronically, launching a 60-day process for further negotiations and implementation measures.
"The United States and Iran, together with the mediator countries Pakistan and Qatar and other relevant states, are currently scheduled to meet tomorrow in Buergenstock for initial discussions on the implementation of the agreement," the Swiss Foreign Ministry said.
The ministry added that no further details regarding the schedule or format of the meeting were currently available.
Tehran says talks may be suspended
Earlier on Thursday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei cast doubt on whether the meeting would proceed as planned, saying discussions on Friday's gathering had been put on hold following the signing of the agreement by both presidents.
"Until a few hours ago, Friday's meeting had been confirmed. However, after the decision was made for the presidents of both sides to sign the agreement, it was decided to temporarily suspend consideration of the Friday meeting," Baghaei said.
US-Iran agreement
On June 17, the United States and Iran announced that they had signed a 14-point memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the conflict in the Middle East.
According to the memorandum, the United States, Iran and their allies declared an immediate and permanent end to military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon.
The parties also pledged not to initiate military action against one another, to refrain from the threat or use of force, and to safeguard Lebanon's territorial integrity and sovereignty.
The memorandum further states that the United States will withdraw forces deployed near Iranian territory within 30 days of a final agreement, while Iran will reopen the Strait of Hormuz and allow commercial vessels to pass free of charge for a perido of 60 days. (ILKHA)
