Syria tells UN Israeli regime's Idlib airstrike was a 'clear violation' of its sovereignty
Syria has formally complained to the United Nations over what it described as Israeli airstrikes on the Abu al-Duhur Military Airbase in Idlib province, calling the attack a clear violation of its sovereignty and territorial integrity and urging the international community to take action against Israel.
The Syrian government said it sent two separate letters to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and UN Security Council President Christina Lassen following the strikes carried out on Aug. 18.
The letters, submitted by Syria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ibrahim Olabi, strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a dangerous escalation that threatens regional security and stability.
According to the letters, Israeli occupation forces carried out eight airstrikes against the Abu al-Duhur Military Airbase in Idlib province.
Damascus said the strikes came at a time when Syria was seeking to strengthen stability and prevent renewed regional tensions.
The Syrian government also accused Israel of continuing a campaign of bombardments, incursions and abductions since Dec. 8, 2024, arguing that such actions have undermined security and efforts to establish stability in the region.
Syria said the airstrikes violate the UN Charter, international law and relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
In its letters, Damascus called on the international community and the UN Security Council to clearly condemn the Israeli attack and take a firm stance to end what it described as repeated violations of Syrian territory.(ILKHA)
