Tsunami advisory lifted after 7.3-magnitude earthquake off Alaska's southern coast

A tsunami advisory issued for Alaska’s southern peninsula following a powerful earthquake has been officially canceled, according to U.S. geological and emergency authorities.
The 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck offshore at 12:37 p.m. local time on Wednesday, initially prompting a tsunami warning for coastal areas. The quake's epicenter was located in the seismically active region south of the Alaska Peninsula, an area known for frequent tectonic movements.
In the immediate aftermath, officials issued a tsunami warning due to the potential for hazardous waves. However, subsequent analysis by the National Tsunami Warning Center led to a downgrade to a tsunami advisory by 1:50 p.m., and ultimately the advisory was canceled altogether by 2:45 p.m.
A small tsunami was detected in Sand Point shortly after the quake, though authorities confirmed it caused no damage or injuries. Emergency management officials reported that the wave was minor and posed no threat to life or property.
Residents along the coast were briefly urged to stay alert and avoid low-lying areas, but normal conditions have since resumed.
Seismologists continue to monitor the region for potential aftershocks, though no significant follow-up quakes have been reported at this time. Local officials have advised the public to remain aware but not alarmed.
Alaska sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region of frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity. The state's emergency response teams remain prepared for such natural events and continue to review infrastructure readiness in the event of future seismic activity. (ILKHA)
