The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has reopened its embassy in Beirut, signaling the end of a diplomatic rift that began in October 2021.
The UAE announced the reopening of its embassy in Beirut, marking the conclusion of a diplomatic crisis that started in October 2021. According to a statement from the official Emirati news agency, WAM, the UAE Foreign Ministry stated that resuming diplomatic activities is "in line with efforts to strengthen bilateral relations" between the UAE and Lebanon.
Omar Al-Shamsi, the ministry's under-secretary, highlighted that the reopening represents a significant step toward advancing bilateral cooperation and demonstrates the UAE's commitment to supporting Lebanon's stability and development. He emphasized that it reflects the close fraternal ties between the two nations and enhances opportunities for collaboration across various sectors, aiming for mutual development and prosperity.
On January 13, an Emirati delegation arrived in Beirut to oversee arrangements for the embassy reopening, under the direction of UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
The diplomatic crisis began in October 2021 when the UAE, along with Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Bahrain, severed ties with Lebanon following comments made by then-Lebanese Information Minister George Kardahi regarding the role of Saudi Arabia and the UAE in the Yemen conflict, which started in 2014.
Since then, Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Kuwait, have taken several reconciliatory steps to enhance ties with Lebanon. This marks a shift in the Gulf nations' stance toward Lebanon following the election of Joseph Aoun as president on January 9. (ILKHA)
