Ugandan military helicopter crashes in Mogadishu, five feared dead

A Ugandan military helicopter, part of the African Union peacekeeping mission in Somalia, crashed this morning at Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu, leaving five of the eight occupants feared dead, according to Ugandan officials.
Felix Kulayigye, spokesperson for the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), reported that three individuals survived the crash but sustained severe burns. “Eight people were on board. Three made it out safely but with severe burns,” Kulayigye stated. “The search is still on. They are fighting the fire.”
Rescue operations are ongoing as authorities work to determine the fate of the remaining five occupants.
The cause of the crash is under investigation, with no details yet released. This marks the second UPDF helicopter incident in Somalia within a year.
In September 2024, a UPDF transport helicopter crashed en route from Mogadishu to Baledogle Airfield, 90 kilometers northwest of the capital, with all four peacekeepers surviving.
Uganda has been a cornerstone of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) since 2007, contributing significantly to efforts to combat insurgency and stabilize the region.Further details are expected as rescue and investigation efforts continue. (ILKHA)
