UN condemns deadly Israeli strike on Syria as 'serious violation' of sovereignty
The United Nations has issued a strong condemnation of an early-morning Israeli attack on Friday in the town of Beit Jinn in the Damascus countryside, which resulted in civilian casualties and was described as a serious violation of Syrian sovereignty.
Najat Rochdi, Deputy UN Special Envoy for Syria, stated from Geneva that the incursion resulted in several civilian deaths and injuries and further "destabilizes an already fragile regional situation."
Rochdi noted that the attack triggered immediate displacement, with multiple families reportedly fleeing the area in search of safety.
The Deputy Special Envoy firmly reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to Syria’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, and urged all parties to adhere strictly to the 1974 Disengagement Agreement between Israel and Syria. She called for an immediate halt to such actions that escalate regional tensions.
The Syrian government also issued a sharp rebuke, officially condemning the incident as a "war crime."
In its statement, the Syrian government warned that the repeated and aggressive nature of Israeli attacks fundamentally threatens regional security and aims to "impose new realities by force."
