UN envoy slams Israel’s airstrikes in Syria as threat to peace

The United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, issued a strong condemnation of Israel’s recent military operations in Syria on Friday, warning that the airstrikes and ground incursions threaten to destabilize the country at a critical juncture.
The envoy’s remarks come as Syrian authorities and human rights groups report civilian casualties and heightened regional tensions.
Pedersen criticized Israel’s actions, which include airstrikes on military targets and a ground operation in southern Syria, stating, “These attacks undermine efforts to build a new Syria at peace with itself and the region, and destabilize Syria at a sensitive time.” He called on Israel to halt its military operations, urging respect for Syria’s sovereignty and existing international agreements. “Israel must cease these attacks, which may amount to serious violations of international law, and refrain from unilateral actions on the ground,” Pedersen added.
The Israeli military confirmed it conducted airstrikes targeting “military capabilities and infrastructure” in Damascus and central Syria, alongside a ground incursion in Daraa province. Israel justified its actions as a response to perceived threats, with officials warning that Syria would pay a “heavy price” if its security interests are jeopardized.
Syrian authorities accused Israel of “deliberately destabilizing” the country, pointing to a series of strikes that have killed at least 13 people, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The escalation follows months of sporadic Israeli operations in Syria, often targeting alleged Iranian-linked sites, though the latest actions mark a significant uptick in intensity.
In his statement, Pedersen emphasized the need for de-escalation, urging all parties to pursue diplomatic solutions. “Dialogue, not military action, is the path to addressing security concerns and preventing further instability,” he said.
As Syria navigates a fragile transitional period, the UN envoy’s plea for restraint underscores the stakes of avoiding a broader conflict in the region. (ILKHA)
