United States: 2 killed, 9 injured in Brown University shooting
Authorities said a wide-ranging manhunt is under way following a mass shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, that killed two students and injured nine others during an exam session on Saturday afternoon.
The shooting occurred at approximately 4:00 p.m. local time (21:00 GMT) inside a classroom at the Barus and Holley Building, part of the university’s engineering school, where final exams were being held. The suspect opened fire in a first-floor lecture hall before fleeing the scene.
Brown University, one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions in the United States, was immediately placed under lockdown, with students and staff instructed to shelter in place as police launched an extensive search for the gunman, who remains at large.
As of Saturday night, law enforcement officials said portions of the campus remained secured, and students in affected areas were being escorted out of buildings by police in stages. Classes and all campus activities were suspended until further notice.
Officials at Rhode Island Hospital confirmed that most of the injured victims are in critical but stable condition, while others were treated for less severe injuries. The identities of the deceased and wounded have not yet been released, pending notification of families.
“This is a day that we hoped never would come to our community,” Brown University President Christina Paxson said in a statement. “It is deeply devastating for all of us.”
Providence police released limited details about the suspect, describing him as a male dressed entirely in black, possibly wearing a mask. Authorities said CCTV footage captured the suspect leaving the building shortly after the shooting, though his face was not visible.
Providence Deputy Police Chief Tim O’Hara said investigators have not yet determined a motive and do not know whether the suspect has any affiliation with Brown University. The type of firearm used has not been disclosed, and the weapon has not been recovered.
“We’re utilizing every resource possible to find this suspect,” O’Hara said, adding that additional armed officers were deployed across Providence and surrounding areas. State police and federal law enforcement agencies are also assisting in the investigation.
University officials said counseling and crisis support services have been made available to students, faculty, and staff. Local authorities urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity as the search continues.
As of early Sunday, the suspect had not been apprehended, and the investigation remains active. Police said they would release additional information as it becomes available. (ILKHA)
