Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), announced on Sunday the agency's readiness to deliver 4,000 trucks loaded with humanitarian aid to the besieged Gaza Strip.
Half of the trucks are carrying essential food supplies, including flour, to address the dire humanitarian crisis. The delivery is expected to follow the recent ceasefire agreement, which may reduce the risk of attacks on aid convoys, according to Lazzarini.
"UNRWA remains steadfast in its commitment to continue operations in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, despite challenges, including the impending Israeli ban on its activities, set to take effect on January 30, 2025," Lazzarini stated.
UNRWA is currently the only agency capable of providing essential healthcare and education services in Gaza, a region devastated by months of Israeli aggression and a long-standing blockade.
In a related development, Rik Peeperkorn, the World Health Organization (WHO) representative in the occupied Palestinian territories, disclosed plans to deploy several field hospitals to Gaza within the next two months.
The initiative aims to support Gaza’s severely impacted healthcare sector, which has been crippled by infrastructure destruction, shortages of medical supplies, and a surge in casualties.
The announcement of aid deliveries and medical support comes as Gaza continues to face one of the worst humanitarian crises in its history, with over 85% of the population displaced and essential services on the brink of collapse. (ILKHA)
