US approves $304 million air-to-air missile deal with Türkiye

The U.S. State Department has given the green light to a potential $304 million arms deal with Türkiye, signaling continued defense cooperation between the NATO allies amid growing geopolitical volatility in the region.
According to a statement released Wednesday by the U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), the approved sale includes 53 AIM-120C-8 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAMs) and six guidance units, components that are designed to enhance Türkiye’s air-to-air combat capabilities. These weapons are optimized for use with F-16 fighter jets, a mainstay of the Turkish Air Force.
The AMRAAM segment of the package is estimated at $225 million, while a separate portion—valued at $79.1 million—includes 60 AIM-9X Sidewinder Block II missiles, 11 associated guidance units, and various logistical and program support services.
RTX Corp, formerly known as Raytheon Technologies, is designated as the primary contractor for the delivery and integration of the systems.
The DSCA has formally notified Congress of the intended transaction, stating that the proposed sale aligns with broader U.S. foreign policy and national security objectives by supporting the military readiness of a key NATO ally.
While the arms deal is expected to bolster Türkiye’s defense posture, it comes at a time when regional observers are voicing growing concerns over the impact of advanced weapons transfers on the Middle East’s strategic balance. The sale also follows renewed efforts by Washington to repair strained ties with Ankara over past disagreements involving defense procurements and regional interventions.
If approved by Congress, the deal would mark a significant step in the continued evolution of U.S.-Turkish defense relations. (ILKHA)
