US declares emergency over screwworm outbreak in livestock
The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has activated its emergency response system over concerns surrounding the New World screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax), a parasitic pest that poses a threat to both animal and human health.
The CDC announced the activation of its emergency response measures, while the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) also confirmed the development.
Federal agencies are coordinating efforts to monitor and contain the threat as authorities seek to prevent the parasite from spreading.
USDA intensifies containment efforts
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is continuing surveillance of livestock populations and implementing measures aimed at limiting the spread of the New World screwworm.
Officials said one of the primary control strategies involves the release of sterile flies, a method that has previously proven effective in suppressing and eliminating screwworm populations.
Parasite poses risk to livestock and humans
The New World screwworm is native to the Americas and is known for depositing eggs in open wounds of animals and, in rare cases, humans.
After hatching, the larvae feed on living tissue, causing severe injuries that can lead to serious health complications if left untreated.
Because of its impact on livestock, wildlife and public health, the parasite is considered a major veterinary and agricultural threat.
Previous outbreaks successfully controlled
The United States eradicated New World screwworm populations in the 1960s through extensive control programs.
More recently, a localized outbreak affecting animals in Florida in 2017 was successfully contained through coordinated intervention efforts.
Authorities said surveillance and containment operations remain ongoing to prevent the re-establishment of the parasite within U.S. territory.(ILKHA)
