A U.S. court has sentenced 73-year-old Illinois landlord Joseph Czuba to 53 years in prison for the brutal murder of six-year-old Palestinian American child Wadee Alfayoumi and the attempted murder of his mother, Hanan Shaheen.

The attack, committed in the early days of Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza in October 2023, sent shockwaves across the United States and Muslim world. Czuba, incited by a climate of rising Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian incitement, forced his way into the home of his Palestinian tenants in the Chicago suburb of Plainville, stabbing the young child 26 times and leaving his mother seriously wounded.

Hanan Shaheen, herself stabbed over a dozen times, managed to escape the frenzied attack by locking herself in a bathroom and calling 911. Her anguished call and powerful courtroom testimony — delivered in Arabic and English — exposed the depth of hatred that had been brewing in Czuba for weeks, driven by his paranoid obsession with news about Gaza and baseless fears about his Muslim neighbors.
