Venezuela lauds Iran’s “courageous” support against U.S. pressure
Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil has publicly thanked Iran for strongly condemning the United States’ recent decision to declare Venezuelan airspace closed, describing Tehran’s position as a bold and principled stand in defense of Venezuela’s sovereignty.
Gil said that on behalf of President Nicolás Maduro and the Venezuelan government, he extends “sincere appreciation” to the Islamic Republic for denouncing Washington’s decision. He emphasized that Iran’s “courageous position” aligns with the sentiments of the Venezuelan people, who view the U.S. move as yet another hostile action against the country.
Gil stressed that the issue reflects broader concerns shared by Caracas and Tehran over repeated violations of international law. He noted that both nations have long faced political and economic pressure from Washington and remain united in their commitment to building “a just and dignified world.”
His comments came shortly after Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei sharply criticized the U.S. president’s decision to close Venezuelan airspace. Baghaei described the action as a blatant violation of established international legal principles, including norms governing civil aviation and international air transport.
Venezuela and Iran, both subject to extensive U.S. sanctions, have strengthened political and strategic cooperation in recent years. Officials from both countries say they will continue coordinating closely in international forums to challenge unilateral measures imposed by Washington. (ILKHA)
