Wikipedia faces backlash after blocking edits on “Gaza Genocide” page
Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales has intervened to block edits to the site’s “Gaza genocide” page, citing what he described as “egregious” anti-Israel bias and a violation of the platform’s neutrality policy.
Wales said the article failed to meet Wikipedia’s editorial standards, arguing that it presented the claim of genocide in Gaza as fact rather than a disputed allegation. In a post on the article’s discussion page, he stated that the entry “needs immediate attention” and should better reflect multiple perspectives on the issue.
The page, which documents allegations that Israel’s military campaign in Gaza amounts to genocide, has now been locked for editing. The protection notice indicates that the freeze is temporary and not an endorsement of the current version.
Wales’s decision followed ongoing disputes among Wikipedia editors over the article’s wording, tone, and sourcing. Some editors supported the intervention, saying it was necessary to restore neutrality, while others accused Wales of yielding to political pressure and undermining efforts to document evidence of mass civilian deaths in Gaza.
The controversy reflects long-standing tensions within Wikipedia over coverage of the Israel-Palestine conflict. Earlier this year, reports revealed multiple cases of coordinated editing campaigns seeking to influence how events in Gaza are described.
Human-rights groups and several international experts have accused Israel of committing acts of genocide during its military operations in Gaza, citing widespread destruction, mass displacement, and high civilian casualties. Israel denies the accusation, saying its actions are aimed at defeating Hamas and defending national security.
The “Gaza genocide” page remains visible to readers, but further changes will be suspended until editors reach a consensus on revisions. The dispute has reignited debate over whether Wikipedia’s neutrality guidelines adequately represent events involving severe human suffering and contested political narratives. (ILKHA)
