Wild elephants kill five in separate attacks in eastern India
At least five people have been killed in a series of wild elephant attacks in India’s eastern Jharkhand state, authorities said, highlighting the growing dangers posed by human-wildlife conflict in forest-adjacent areas.
According to local officials, three people were trampled to death in the Sirka forest area of Ramgarh district after encountering roaming elephants. Forest and emergency response teams were dispatched to the area following the incident, while efforts to identify some of the victims are still ongoing.
On the same day, another fatal attack occurred in Jidu village, located in the Angara area near the state capital Ranchi, where a 36-year-old man was killed by a wild elephant. Police later confirmed that a fifth victim, identified as 32-year-old Amit Kumar Rajwar, died after approaching a herd of elephants in an apparent attempt to record videos and take selfies.
Authorities said Rajwar moved dangerously close to a group of eight elephants, triggering an attack that resulted in his death at the scene.
Ramgarh District Forest Officer Nitish Kumar stated that forest rangers are actively monitoring elephant movements in the region, where large herds continue to roam freely between Ramgarh and neighboring Bokaro district. Security data indicates that elephant groups numbering more than 40 have been observed along the border areas.
In a separate case, police confirmed that Sanicharwa Munda succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical treatment at a hospital, bringing the total death toll to five. Two others, including a woman, were reported injured and remain under medical care.
Jharkhand has witnessed a rise in deadly encounters between humans and wild elephants in recent years, as shrinking forest habitats and expanding human settlements increase the likelihood of contact. Officials have urged residents to avoid forested areas during elephant movements and warned against attempting to approach or film wild animals.
Investigations into the incidents are ongoing, while forest authorities continue efforts to track elephant herds and prevent further loss of life. (ILKHA)
