Yemen says Saudi Arabia carried out 94 airstrikes in 24 hours
Yemeni Armed Forces spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree said Friday that Saudi warplanes carried out 94 airstrikes across Yemen over the past 24 hours, accusing Riyadh of escalating attacks against civilian areas.
Saree said the strikes targeted sites in the provinces of Sanaa, Saada, Taiz, Hajjah, Amran and Ibb, causing civilian casualties and damage. He said the latest attacks brought the number of Saudi air and missile attacks since the start of the latest escalation to 1,350. The figures could not be independently verified.
According to Saree, F-15 and Typhoon fighter jets launched the airstrikes from Saudi bases in Khamis Mushait and Taif, while missile attacks were fired from the Saudi border areas of Najran and Jizan.
Sanaa government spokesman Omar al-Bukhaiti said Friday that protecting civilians and their property in Taiz remained a priority for the Yemeni Armed Forces.
Al-Bukhaiti said the forces' strikes were directed at Saudi forces and their concentrations, while calling on residents of Taiz to support efforts to remove what he described as an occupation from the province.
He also urged Yemenis fighting alongside Saudi-backed forces to accept an amnesty announced by the Supreme Political Council, saying those who surrender through channels designated by the Interior Ministry would be guaranteed safety.
Earlier, Ansar Allah Political Bureau member Mohammad al-Bukhaiti said that the movement had repeatedly called for dialogue among Yemenis, but accused outside forces of deliberately exacerbating tensions in Taiz.
A Yemeni military source had warned earlier this week that attempts to establish new Saudi military positions inside Yemen would be targeted, saying the Yemeni Armed Forces would respond to Saudi attacks on the country's provinces.
The latest claims come amid a renewed escalation in fighting after months of relative calm. Recent statements by the Sanaa-based authorities have reported repeated Saudi airstrikes across several Yemeni provinces, with Saree reporting 27 strikes on Sept. 26 and 35 on Sept. 30. (ILKHA)
