The Yemeni Armed Forces (YAF) announced on Thursday that they had carried out a large-scale military operation targeting Saudi military positions and reinforcements, inflicting heavy casualties and significant material losses amid escalating tensions between the two sides.
YAF spokesperson Brigadier General Yahya Saree said the operation was launched in response to what he described as the continuation of the Saudi-led blockade and military campaign against Yemen.
According to Saree, Yemeni forces targeted Saudi military concentrations in the areas of Al-Ruwayk, Al-Abr, and Al-Thaniya, as well as camps belonging to the First and Third Emergency Brigades, using a combination of ballistic missiles and armed drones.
Saree said the operation resulted in the killing and wounding of hundreds of Saudi-backed fighters, although these claims could not be independently verified.
He also claimed that Yemeni forces destroyed and burned numerous military camps, weapons depots, military vehicles, and other equipment in the Al-Wadi'ah area in eastern Yemen.
No immediate statement confirming or commenting on the reported attack had been issued by Saudi authorities.
The Yemeni military warned Saudi Arabia against what it described as any further escalation, saying Riyadh would bear responsibility for the consequences of additional military action.
Saree also called on Yemeni nationals serving alongside Saudi forces to leave military camps and return to their home areas, warning that they could become targets in future operations.
He said the Yemeni Armed Forces remain on full alert and are prepared to respond to any new military developments.
The announcement came hours after the Yemeni Armed Forces said they had targeted a Saudi oil tanker in the Gulf of Aden, describing the strike as part of their ongoing maritime blockade against Saudi shipping.
According to Saree, Yemeni forces fired a ballistic missile at the DAISY oil tanker, claiming the vessel was hit and forced to alter its course.
He said the operation formed part of what the Yemeni Armed Forces describe as a "blockade for blockade" strategy aimed at pressuring Saudi Arabia to end restrictions imposed on Yemen.
Saree added that Yemeni forces would continue monitoring Saudi maritime traffic and would prevent Saudi oil tankers from transiting through the Red Sea until what he described as the legitimate demands of the Yemeni people are met.
According to the YAF, the latest operation brings the number of Saudi oil vessels targeted since the maritime blockade began on 22 July to nine. (ILKHA)
