TİHEK: July 15 was an attack on the will of the nation
Türkiye's Human Rights and Equality Institution (TİHEK) said the July 15, 2016 coup attempt targeted the constitutional order, the rule of law and the nation's democratic will, describing the public's resistance as a symbol of national unity and commitment to democracy.
Türkiye's Human Rights and Equality Institution (TİHEK) issued a statement marking July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day, saying the failed coup attempt carried out by the FETÖ terrorist organization on July 15, 2016, was a direct attack on the constitutional order, the rule of law and the will of the nation.
The institution stressed that the protection of human dignity, fundamental rights and freedoms, and the rule of law is only possible under a constitutional system deriving its legitimacy from the people's will.
It said any unlawful attempt to overthrow the constitutional order targets not only the legitimate government but also the legal safeguards established to protect human rights and fundamental freedoms.
Nation's unity thwarted the coup attempt
TİHEK said the unity, courage and determination demonstrated by the Turkish people on the night of July 15 prevented the coup attempt from succeeding.
The statement noted that the public defended the country, its flag and its independence, proving that national sovereignty could not be usurped by any force.
A lasting symbol of democracy
Ten years after the failed coup attempt, TİHEK said July 15 has come to symbolize the nation's commitment to democracy, independence and its shared future rather than being remembered solely as a coup attempt.
The institution added that the solidarity displayed that night remains one of the strongest examples of the supremacy of the national will over all forms of tutelage.
TİHEK concluded its statement by commemorating those who lost their lives during the events of July 15 with mercy, gratitude and respect, while expressing appreciation for the veterans. (ILKHA)
