Türkiye prepares for rain and snow as cold spell arrives
A cold and wet weather system is expected to affect Istanbul and much of northwestern Türkiye starting Friday, Dec. 26, according to the General Directorate of Meteorology.
Authorities said temperatures will fall sharply in the coming days, bringing rain, sleet and snowfall in higher areas. Icy conditions are expected during the night and early morning hours, and the cold spell is forecast to continue into the first days of the new year, potentially affecting transportation, agriculture and daily life.
Meteorology officials said the Marmara region will enter a cold and rainy period beginning Friday. Rain is expected in Istanbul, while provinces such as Kocaeli, Sakarya and Yalova are forecast to see mixed rain and snow from Saturday.
In Istanbul, rainfall is expected to continue through Friday. On Saturday, sleet may be seen in higher parts of the Anatolian side of the city. By Monday, Dec. 29, mixed rain and snow is forecast across Istanbul, with snowfall possible in elevated areas.
Temperatures across the region are expected to fall by 5 to 8 degrees Celsius below seasonal averages and remain low through the first week of January.
According to forecasts for the period between Dec. 26 and Jan. 2, the lowest expected temperatures are 0 degrees Celsius in Istanbul, minus 3 degrees in Edirne and Kırklareli, minus 1 degree in Tekirdağ and Kocaeli, minus 2 degrees in Sakarya and 1 degree in Yalova.
Meteorologists warned that freezing temperatures overnight and in the early morning hours could lead to ice formation on roads and sidewalks. Drivers have been advised to be cautious, particularly in higher elevations and on intercity roads.
The cold weather also poses a risk to agriculture. Authorities said frost could damage crops in areas where agricultural activity continues during winter, and farmers have been advised to take protective measures.
Forecasts indicate that cold conditions will persist into New Year’s Day, with precipitation expected across much of the country. Rain is forecast in lower areas, while snow is possible at higher elevations. Authorities urged residents to follow official weather updates, especially those planning travel during the holiday period. (ILKHA)
