Türkiye warns of war risk after India’s attack on Pakistan
The Turkish Foreign Ministry expressed deep concern over escalating tensions between Pakistan and India following an Indian attack on May 6, warning that it heightens the risk of all-out war.
In a press release issued today, Türkiye condemned the strike, along with any actions targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure, labeling them as provocative.
The ministry urged both nations to exercise restraint and avoid unilateral moves that could further destabilize the region. It called for immediate steps to reduce tensions and establish mechanisms, including counter-terrorism measures, to prevent similar incidents.
Reflecting Türkiye’s longstanding interest in South Asian stability, the Foreign Ministry also voiced support for Pakistan’s demand for a transparent inquiry into the April 22 deadly attack that precipitated the recent hostilities.
Türkiye has historically maintained close diplomatic ties with both Pakistan and India, and its call for dialogue underscores Ankara’s broader role as a regional mediator. Observers note that Türkiye’s appeal aligns with international efforts—led by the United States and China—to calm tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
No further details on Türkiye’s proposed mediation role were provided, but the Foreign Ministry’s statement concludes with a clear message: “We expect that measures will be taken as soon as possible to reduce tensions in the region, and that the necessary mechanisms will be put in place to prevent the recurrence of similar incidents.”
“We expect swift action to de-escalate and ensure regional stability,” the statement concluded, emphasizing the need for dialogue and cooperation to avert further conflict. (ILKHA)
