Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced on Monday that relations between Russia and North Korea have reached a new level of momentum over the past three and a half months, signaling the rapid growth of a strategic partnership between Moscow and Pyongyang.
Lavrov made the remarks during his meeting with North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui in Moscow, emphasizing that bilateral contacts have strongly reinforced the commitments agreed upon during the Pyongyang summit held in June 2024.
“Over the past three and a half months, our relations have gained a robust momentum in implementing the agreements established by our leaders during the Pyongyang summit,” Lavrov stated, referring to the high-level meeting between President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un earlier this year.
The Russian foreign minister welcomed Choe ahead of her scheduled trip to Minsk, noting that ongoing cooperation within the framework of the International Conference on Eurasian Security contributes to the shared objective of establishing a more equitable and multipolar world order.
Lavrov also paid tribute to the historical solidarity between the two nations, recalling the contributions of the Korean People’s Army in defending Russian territory during the Second World War, particularly in the Kursk region. “Our historical bonds continue to reinforce the friendship and shared commitment to justice that define our partnership,” he added.
The meeting also addressed institutional cooperation, with Lavrov highlighting the role of the new inter-parliamentary committee created during a North Korean delegation’s visit to the Russian State Duma in August. He described the committee as a “key mechanism” to consolidate the growing strategic cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang.
Both sides discussed coordination on key international and regional issues, focusing on Eurasian security, defense collaboration, and ongoing engagement within the United Nations framework. The ministers reaffirmed their joint stance on resisting Western unilateralism and supporting sovereign equality among nations.
The talks concluded with a pledge to deepen cooperation across multiple sectors, including political, economic, and security domains. Lavrov emphasized that the sustained dialogue between the two countries reflects a shared vision for stability and mutual support in the face of global geopolitical tensions. (ILKHA)
