16 killed, 35 injured in bus crash in South Africa's Western Cape
A passenger bus carrying 73 people overturned near Touws River in South Africa's Western Cape province on Thursday, killing 16 people, including three children, and injuring at least 35 others, provincial authorities said.
The bus was travelling from Cape Town to the Eastern Cape when the crash occurred on the N1 highway near Touws River.
Maxine Bezuidenhout, Chief Director of Traffic Management at the Western Cape Department of Mobility, said the injured, including the bus driver, were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
According to the driver's statement, the bus overturned after he swerved to avoid a vehicle that had entered the highway from a side road.
Authorities have opened an investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the crash. (ILKHA)
