Araghchi: Iran will not enter final deal talks while threats continue
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran will not enter negotiations on a final agreement while threats against the country continue, warning that pressure and intimidation would undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts.
In a statement posted on X on Tuesday, Araghchi stressed that Iran remains committed to defending its interests and would not engage in talks on a comprehensive deal under conditions of coercion.
"Millions of proud Iranians rallied in unity to honor Grand Ayatollah Khamenei and his legacy. Neither them nor our Brave Armed Forces are moved by any threats," Araghchi wrote, referring to large public gatherings held in support of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.
The foreign minister said the demonstrations reflected national unity and resilience in the face of external pressure, adding that both the Iranian public and the country's military institutions remained steadfast despite ongoing threats.
Araghchi also pointed to the terms of a previously agreed memorandum of understanding, arguing that its provisions explicitly prohibit the start of negotiations on a final agreement while threats remain in place.
"Paragraph 13 of the MoU is clear: Negotiations on a final deal will not commence if threats continue. Honor your signature," he said.
The remarks come amid continued diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving disputes surrounding Iran's nuclear program and broader regional security issues. Talks between Iran and Western powers have faced repeated setbacks in recent years, with disagreements over sanctions, security guarantees, and compliance mechanisms complicating efforts to reach a lasting agreement.
Iranian officials have consistently maintained that meaningful negotiations require mutual respect and the removal of pressure tactics, while Western governments have called on Tehran to engage constructively in diplomatic processes and address concerns related to its nuclear activities.
Araghchi's latest comments underscore the challenges facing ongoing diplomatic initiatives and suggest that Tehran is unlikely to move toward final-stage negotiations unless it sees a reduction in what it views as political and military pressure from its counterparts.
Despite periodic diplomatic contacts, significant differences remain between Iran and Western powers over the conditions necessary to revive or conclude a comprehensive agreement, leaving the future of negotiations uncertain. (ILKHA)
