Russian strikes on Ukraine kill 22 ahead of Ankara NATO Summit
At least 22 people were killed in Russian missile and drone attacks on Kyiv and surrounding areas ahead of the NATO Summit in Ankara, Ukrainian authorities said, as fighting between Russia and Ukraine continued to intensify.
Ukrainian officials said Russia launched its second large-scale missile and drone assault on Kyiv and nearby regions within a week, just ahead of the summit in the Turkish capital.
According to the authorities, 15 people were killed in Kyiv and seven others in the surrounding Kyiv region during the overnight attacks. Dozens of people were also injured, while around 30 residential buildings sustained severe damage.
Large fires also broke out at warehouses in the town of Vyshneve, in the Bucha district near Kyiv, after they were hit in the strikes.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on the United States and European allies to ensure that the NATO Summit in Ankara produces concrete decisions to strengthen Ukraine's air defense capabilities.
Meanwhile, Russia's Ministry of Defense said its forces carried out precision strikes targeting Ukrainian military airfields as well as military, industrial, fuel and energy infrastructure.
The ministry also claimed that Ukraine attempted to launch 625 drones against Russian territory overnight, adding that Russian air defense systems intercepted 613 of them. (ILKHA)
