Austria expels four Russian diplomats, Russia vows response
Austria has expelled four Russian diplomats over alleged activities incompatible with their diplomatic status, while Russia has vowed to respond to the decision.
In a statement, Austria's Foreign Ministry said three of the diplomats were assigned to the Russian Embassy in Vienna, while the fourth served at Russia's delegation to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).
The ministry said the four diplomats had been declared personae non gratae and ordered to leave the country, but did not disclose details about the activities that led to the decision.
Russia vows response
The Russian Embassy in Vienna condemned the expulsions, describing them as "another unfriendly step" by the Austrian authorities and warning that Moscow would respond.
Russian officials also said retaliatory measures against Austria were inevitable.
Although Austria did not specify the allegations, the phrase "activities incompatible with diplomatic status" is commonly used in diplomatic practice for suspected espionage-related activities.
Expulsions follow previous security measures
The latest decision brings the number of Russian diplomats expelled by Austria since 2020 to 18.
Earlier this year, Austria expelled three Russian diplomats after authorities raised concerns over antenna installations on Russian diplomatic buildings in Vienna that officials said could be used for intelligence gathering.
Vienna remains a key diplomatic hub
Vienna hosts numerous international organizations, including the OSCE, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and several United Nations agencies, making the Austrian capital one of Europe's most important diplomatic centres.
Because of its large diplomatic community, Vienna has long been regarded as a major hub for intelligence activity, with diplomats from many countries operating under diplomatic immunity.
