Bangladesh dengue death toll rises to 307 as cases surpass 100,000
Bangladesh has recorded 307 dengue-related deaths since the beginning of the year, while the number of confirmed cases has surpassed 100,000 as the mosquito-borne disease continues to spread across the country.
According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), four more people died from dengue during the past 24 hours, while 2,167 new patients were admitted to hospitals, bringing the cumulative number of infections this year to 101,442.
Health authorities said 2,428 patients recovered and were discharged from hospitals over the same period, while thousands of patients remain under treatment nationwide.
The latest figures indicate that dengue transmission remains high following a sharp increase in cases during September, the deadliest month of the year so far.
Officials said favourable conditions for mosquito breeding following seasonal rainfall have contributed to the continued spread of the disease, prompting health authorities to intensify surveillance and mosquito-control measures.
Bangladesh is also evaluating the possibility of conducting dengue vaccine trials as authorities seek longer-term strategies to curb recurring outbreaks. Health experts have warned that all four dengue virus serotypes are now circulating in the country, increasing the risk of severe illness among people who become infected more than once.
Dengue remains a major public health challenge
Bangladesh recorded 413 dengue-related deaths in 2025 and 575 in 2024, highlighting the continued public health burden posed by the disease.
Dengue is a viral infection transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes and is common in tropical and subtropical regions. While most infections cause flu-like symptoms, severe cases can lead to internal bleeding, organ failure and death if not treated promptly.(ILKHA)
